How to Measure for a Standard Window
The guides below explain how to measure for a standard window. For guidance on bay windows or doors, see the bottom of this page.
What you’ll need:
-
Metal tape measure
-
Pencil and paper
Advice for measuring:
-
Measure in centimetres
-
Follow our instructions carefully and don’t make any adjustments for fittings or headrails – we’ll take care of this for you
-
Look out for window handles & obstructions when measuring
Decide where you want your blind to hang:
-
On the inside of your window opening (‘Inside recess’)
-
On the wall outside of your window opening (‘Exact’)
Measuring for Inside Recess Fitting
-
Measure the width three times, across the top, middle and bottom of the window. Use the smallest measurement.
-
Measure the height three times, across the left, middle and right of the window. Again, use the smallest measurement.
Remember to double check your measurements!
We will deduct 1cm from your blind width measurements in order to make the blind a comfortable fit in the window recess. We will not make any adjustment to the height.
Measuring for Exact Fitting
-
Decide how wide you want the overall blind to be. For roller blinds, we recommend adding 9cm to the window opening width measurement to provide adequate overlap. For blackout fabric blinds adding 14cm is better to limit light ingress. [The actual fabric will be 4cm narrower than the overall blind which allows space for the brackets.]
For pleated blinds, we recommend adding 5cm to the window opening width measurement to provide adequate overlap. For blackout fabrics adding 10cm is better to limit light ingress. -
Decide how high you want the blind above the window recess and whether you want the blind to fall to the window sill or to below the sill. Measure from where you want the top of the blind to where you want the bottom of the blind.
Remember to double check your measurements!
